Bringing together organizations working with civic education in Ukraine

On Jan 25, the EWC programme “Schools for Democracy: Supporting Educational Reforms in Ukraine 2018-2021” organized a meeting for the community of practice working in the field of civic education in Ukraine.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Institute for the Modernization of the Content of Education and Lviv In-Service Teaching Institute attended the joint discussion and presented the most urgent needs for the reform on secondary education.

OSCE, Amnesty International Ukraine, the All-Ukrainian Association of Teachers of History and Social Studies (Nova Doba), the Ukrainian Step by Step Foundation, Development of Citizenship Competences in Ukraine (DOCCU) Swiss-Ukrainian project, the Center for Educational Initiatives and other organizations presented their ongoing projects and the main areas where the third sector can contribute to the reform of secondary education and development of citizenship competences. As a result, many common ideas and opportunities for cooperation were identified by the end of the discussion.

Experts of the “Schools for Democracy” Programme expressed their support and intention for further engagement in the following areas: participate in the elaboration of the educational standards, support and development of teacher’s autonomy, online courses and learning materials on cross-cutting development of democratic competences (among teachers, administration, parents and students). The need to inform the wider public about the principles behind the reform of secondary education, particularly the lobbying for joining efforts, was underlined.

Participants at the meeting agreed that such events should be held every 2-3 months and expressed their hope to have a wider range of organizations and initiatives engaged in civic education joining the meetings in the future. Next meeting for the community of practice is planned to be held in March 2018
