New ideas & expertise – EWC Expert Group established!

EWC has recently established an expert group to develop advice on the development of programme proposals and help the centre apply the latest trends and relevant research on its daily work.

During the last years, citizenship and human rights education has taken on new urgency on the political agenda. Education has become key to address challenges like rising disenchantment with democracy and fear of immigration, refugees, and cultural and religious diversity. There is a growing demand for expertise on new emerging topics and areas. Parallel, the EWC wishes to strengthen its work in research & development in line with its mandate.

The EWC strategy plan 2017-2020 states that EWC shall “support and apply research and development on education for intercultural understanding, human rights and democratic citizenship”. To this end, EWC will work closer with experts with a strong academic background and long experiences in citizenship and human rights education who can contribute across EWC programming and activities. The experts will provide advice on the development of programme proposals, contribute with expertise on specific topics and support EWC to apply latest trends and relevant research in our daily work. A first focus area for 2017 is to strengthen EWC's work on monitoring & evaluation.

EWC is delighted to cooperate with Dr Felisa Tibbitts (US) and Dr Michalis Kakos (UK/ Greece). Dr. Tibbitts is a Lecturer in the International Education Development Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Chair in Human Rights Education in the Department of Law, Economics and Governance at Utrecht University. Dr. Kakos is Senior Lecturer at Carnegie School of Education, Leeds Beckett University.

Caroline Gebara, Senior Advisor at EWC, will coordinate the cooperation: “We do look forward to work with them on new emerging topics and areas. One great benefit we foresee for the EWC is to better link educational policy – practice – research, which is at the core of the EWC mandate.”

A kick-off meeting was held August 27-28, 2017 in Oslo.
