Policy and Practice meet at Schools for Democracy Launch Conference

Liliia Hrynevych, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, dedicated an hour to questions and answers from engaged schools at the launching conference of EWC’s enhanced programme “Schools for Democracy: Supporting Educational Reforms in Ukraine 2018-2021.

The conference was held in Kyiv January 30. The event was celebrated together with education professionals, school representatives, experts, partners and members of the National Network of Programme’s trainers.

In addition to Minister Hrynevych,, opening speeches were given by H.E. Ole T. Horpestad, Ambassador of Norway to Ukraine, and Ana Perona-Fjeldstad, Executive Director of the European Wergeland Centre.

The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine emphasized the importance of cooperation with the European Wergeland Centre regarding the ongoing reform of educational processes at all levels.

"It is very important for us that the Programme will support the creation of educational policies, elaboration of new educational standards, visits and exchanges, that will expand the horizons of our educators," Liliia Hrynevych said.

As part of the conference, the round table discussion - Democratization of School Environment was held with school heads involved in the previous two cycles of the programme. Representatives of schools which already completed the Programme shared their experiences and answered the questions from the audience.

The event finished with the joint declarations on cooperation signed between the Programme and 47 newly selected schools from all regions of the country.

“Together with parents, kids and teachers from our school we have decided that we need assistance in creating the environment for the better new Ukrainian school and establishing partner relations among all stakeholders. For this reason, we have applied for the “Schools for Democracy” Programme.” Lyudmyla Kolesnyk, Lysychansk, school No5, Luhansk region, said.

The Programme is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway. It is implemented by the European Wergeland Centre in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Council of Europe, Centre of Education Initiatives and ISAR Yednannya.
