Practical information for conference participants. The conference is fully booked.

Getting from Gardermoen airport to Oslo city center

The train station is located within the terminal building (make a right when leaving the customs area), where you will find both the local train NSB and the airport express train Flytoget . Please note that you need to purchase the ticket before boarding, and that the local train ticket is not valid on the airport express train and vice versa.

Local train NSB

Departure every 20-30 minutes.
Duration: 30 min
Direction: any train leaving from track 4
End station: Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) if you are going directly to the opening, Nationaltheatret if you are checking in at the hotel before the opening
Price one way: 101 NOK / 11 Euro
Tickets can be purchased from the vending machines located on the floor above the platforms.

Airport express train 

Departure every 20 minutes.
Duration: 25 min
Direction: Asker or Drammen
End station: Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) if you are going directly to the opening, Nationaltheatret if you are checking in at the hotel before the opening
Price one way: 190 NOK / 20 Euro


Taxis can easily be found just outside the terminal building. Please be aware that taxis are expensive (from 1 000 NOK / 110 Euro per taxi) and take longer than any of the trains.

Please note that the cost for local travel/airport transfer is not reimbursed by EWC.

This newly opened hotel is in the centre of Oslo, within walking distance to all conference venues (approximately 700 meters). The small but efficient rooms have a very typical ‘Nordic touch’ and it is said to be the ‘smartest hotel in Norway’.

Registration for Panel Sessions

On Thursday 15th and Friday 16th there will be parallel panel sessions. You are invited to register for the panel sessions of your choice by 7th of November by following this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LZ5GVM2

We would be grateful if you could indicate 2 choices for each parallel session so that we can ensure balanced participation in all groups.

Please note that registration starts from 16:00. The venue is located 1 km from your hotel, please see enclosed map. If you come directly from the airport, you can store your luggage at the venue.

As the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg will open the session, we kindly request that all guests should be registered and seated by 17:00.

After the opening speeches we invite you to explore the school exhibition of democratic practices where school leaders, teachers and students in 30 schools from 18 countries presents the democratic practice and culture of their schools.

A finger-food buffet and drinks will be served.

We will provide bus transport from Sentralen to the hotel. The bus leave at 20:15.

Getting to and from the conference venue

The venue is located 1,5 km from your hotel. You can easily walk through the city center (please see enclosed map), or take the bus provided from your hotel. The bus will leave the hotel at 08:10.

If you are not yet registered, please note that registration is open from 08:00 – 08:45.

The exterior of Gamle Logen is currently undergoing renovations. There will be no disturbances from this once you are inside the building.

After the end of the day’s sessions, a bus will be provided to take you back to your hotel. The bus will leave Gamle Logen at 17:00.

Getting to the City Hall

The City Hall is located 700 metres from your hotel. There will be no buses to or from the City Hall. However, representatives from the European Wergeland Centre will meet you in the hotel lobby and walk with you. Please be in the lobby and ready to leave by 18:30.

If you prefer to order a taxi, the hotel can easily assist you.

Dress code

Dress code for the dinner is business attire or national costume.

Conference 16th November

09:00 – 13:00

The conference will take place at Gamle Logen, the same venue as on the 15th. We will provide bus transport from the hotel to the conference venue. The bus will leave the hotel at 08:15.

Luggage storage

You can store your luggage at the conference venue if you leave directly for your flight/train after the conference. If you prefer, you can also store your luggage at the hotel.

End of conference/how to get to the airport
The conference ends at 13:00 (after lunch). Please note that we are not organizing any bus transport this afternoon. Gamle Logen is located 800 m from Oslo Central Station (Oslo S). The train will take you to the airport in less than 30 minutes.
If you prefer to book a taxi, the organizers will be happy to assist you. Please note that the cost will be at your own expense.

Working language

The working language of the conference is English. No interpretation is provided.

Expenses covered

The organizers cover costs related to all activities in the conference programme. This includes:
- 2 nights at the conference hotel, with breakfast (14-16 November)
- Reception with finger food and drinks 14 November
- Lunch and coffee breaks during the Conference 15 and 16 November
- Dinner at the City Hall 15 November
- Bus transfer as specified in the program
Other activities (e.g. extra meals, airport transfer, taxis, additional nights at the hotel) will be at your own expense.
